Travel Belize & some Quick Facts
There are a few basic elements that make travel Belize such a great experience and has people coming back for more year after year. Of course
we've mentioned the coral reef, the historical aspect of the Mayan ruins, the beautiful beaches and the friendly people. But the country is very
stable and pleasant due to a sound government, among other things. In fact, Belize is different even from other Central American countries. First
of all, it was a British colony, not a Spanish one. It was a colony until pretty recently, 1981. The official language is English, which makes
travel Belize pretty convenient for all the English speakers out there. Colonization has many faces, but some of the beneficial aspects are:
- the education system is excellent and Belize citizens are very well educated
- government is strong, with a strong legistlature
- parks, sanctuaries and preserves are well preserved, a holdover from colonial times
Travel Belize
These days, travelers to Belize will learn that Belize is still a member of the British Commonwealth. That means Belize recognizes the monarchy and
retains a governor or high commissioner representative of the monarchy in the country. It's rather like an ambassador position. There are regular
meetings of members of the Commonwealth, which include Australia and New Zealand. They discuss economic and technical issues related to cooperation
between the members, and write proposals regarding international economic affairs.
English Common Law is the basis for the legal system in Belize, which includes a House of Representatives plus a Senate. The Senate is appointed,
not elected. One of the main issues these days is the ongoing border dispute with neighboring Buatemala, both on the north and the south borders of
hte countries. It's all based on deals made by the British government decades ago, before Belize gained independence, and it's easy to see the
points being made by either side of the dispute. Your travel Belize vacation won't bring you into contact with any type of friction like this,
however!
The British left a positive enduring legacy of environmental awareness, however, which nobody can dispute. Belize has more than 40% protected
land, in the form of national park or reserve land. Travel Belize and you'll see just how well preserved and beautiful this country really is!
There isn't even very much paved road in Belize, less than four hundred miles, in fact. Eco travelers apprectiate this, as does everyone! If you
compare this to other countries, it's quite impressive. It's a very high rate of conservation of natural resources. Travel Belize and see the
beauty of the natural resources and the country as a whole. We know you'll love it!
